Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the major Hindu festivals celebrated across the globe with great pomp and grandeur. Ganesh-utsav is observed in the Hindu calendar month of “bhadrapada” starting on the ‘Shukla Chaturdashi’. This year, 9th September marks the beginning of this auspicious festival.
Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. He is considered as the God of wisdom, prosperity and strength. Mythology tells us that, Ganesha was a creation of Goddess Parvati. She set him to guard the door while she bathed. When Lord Shiva tried to enter the place, he was opposed by Ganesha as he did not know him. This enraged Lord Shiva. Furious, he sent the ‘Ghanas’ or ghosts after him. He defeated them single handedly. Lord Indra and all the other Devas and trinities failed before him. In one such combat, Lord Shiva severed Ganesha’s head. This infuriated Godess Parvati, who then vowed to destroy the universe to create a better one. Seeing her rage, Shiva promised her to bring back her son. Thus, began a search for a head which ended with Shiva replacing the head of Ganesha with an elephant’s head. Thus, Ganesha- the elephant God was born. It is believed that worshipping Ganesha before any venture or travel brings good luck and fortune.
